In the Újvidéki Színház - Novi Sad theatre - performances are held in Hungarian language

The first theatrical performance was held in Sremski Karlovci in 1734, under the management of Emanuil Kozacinski. Modern period of theatrical creativity started in 1861 by foundation of Srpsko narodno pozoriste (Serbian National Theatre) in Novi Sad.
In other towns of Vojvodina there are professional theatres too. Pozoriste mladih (Theatre of Youth) in Novi Sad, Narodno i Decije pozoriste (National Theatre and Children Theatre) in Subotica and Narodno pozoriste (National Theatre) in Zrenjanin give performances in Serbian and Hungarian languages. Theatre troupes from Ujvideki Szinhaz (Novi Sad Theatre) and the theatre "Kostolanyi Deze" in Subotica perform in Hungarian language only.

Theatric life in Vojvodina is enriched with the activity of 35 amateur theatres. Amateur theatres performing in languages of national minorities have the function of professional ones. Well-known amateur theatres are theatre of Slovaks "Vladimir Hurban Vladimirov", Ruthenian theatre "Djadja" and Romanian theatrical review "Theatric days" in Vojvodina.
There are numerous drama festivals. The most significant are: Sterijino pozorje, Festival of Professional Theatres of Vojvodina, Festival of Children's Theatres, Review of Theatres in Languages of National Minorities, Festival of Small and Experimental Scenes and Festival of Theatrical Classics "Vrsacka pozorisna jesen" (Vrsac's Theatrical Autumn")
SRPSKO NARODNO POZORISTE
in Novi Sad is the oldest theatre in Yugoslavia. It has three ensembles: Drama, Opera and Ballet.
