The most famous excavation site Gomolava, on the bank of the Sava river, provides possibilities for observing the culture from the year 5,000 B.C. up to the sixteenth century A.D.
The most significant investigations from the classical period were carried out on the remains of Roman town Sirmium in Sremska Mitrovica. The best-known medieval site is "Dombo" near Rakovac.

Monasteries and churches

In the period from the thirteenth to the eighteenth century, 35 orthodox monasteries were constructed on Fruska Gora, while only 15 are still existing. They store rear examples of medieval arts, handwritten and printed books.

For centuries, monasteries were centers of national spirituality and culture. They were devastated in the Second World War, while only five of them were not destroyed. Cultural wealth is particularly rich in Novo Hopovo, Krusedol, Sisatovac, Beocin, Vrdnik - Ravanica and Jazak.
With characteristics of baroque architecture and fine arts, especially valuable are monasteries Bodjani and Kovilj in Backa, while the monastery Mesic in Banat has the nice painting and valuable library.
Remains of medieval churches are very interesting. Araca near Novi Becej is an impressive ruin of the Roman basilica. From the Roman-Gothic church Dombo at Rakovac, only stone plastic is saved as well as original apsis from Franciscan monastery in Bac.
By their interesting architecture and artistic values of paintings and carvings on the iconostases, as well as of wall paintings stand out churches built in the eighteenth century, primarily Nikolajevska Crkva, Saborna crkva and Almaska crkva in Novi Sad, as well as Saborna crkva in Sremski Karlovci.

Fortresses, castles and palaces

The most attractive cultural monument is Petrovaradinska tvrdjava (Petrovaradin Fortress) constructed between 1690 and 1776 on the spot where far back in Roman period there was a fortification.
Still there are remains of castles in Bac, Slankamen and Vrdnik.
Palaces used to be built on large estates. Among them there are several beautiful and significant architectural achievements in the style of Baroque, Classicism or Secession (Celarevo, Horgos, Aleksa Santic).

According to tradition, HOPOVO MONASTERY is memorial of Despot family Brankovic, while the first reliable data originate from the year 1541. The present church was built in 1576. It was painted by frescos in the period between 1608 and 1654. Instead of the old one, Teodor Kracun (Serbian El Greco) painted the new iconostasis in the Baroque style. The architecture of that worship attracts special attention, as the unknown builder managed to sublime in it the elements of Serbian Moravian building period with the Islamic and modern European influences. In the sixteenth century this monastery became significant cultural center of Serbia. Dositej Obradovic, the first Serbian educationalist, began his education in that monastery.
