The first organized forms of sport in Vojvodina, noted more than two centuries ago, were the archery associations. The Novi Sad archery association, which is today among the best in Yugoslavia, was founded in 1790. In the middle of 19th century in Novi Sad begins the organized gymnastics and fencing activities, and in 1885 a rowing club "Danubius" was founded, which even today achieves significant sports results.
 
The Vojvodina sportsmen have achieved world top in martial arts and sports with a ball.
Dejan Bodiroga was born in Klek near Zrenjanin. As a boy he dreamed about professional career in sports with his friends, brothers Vladimir and Nikola Grbic, from the same village. They couldn't imagine that they would become so successful in volleyball and basketball, and that they would meet again at the Atlanta Olympics in 1992.
Greatest achievements: Gold medal at the European Basketball Championship in Athens 1995.; Gold medal at the European Basketball Championship in Barcelona 1997.; Best Player at the Basketball Junior World Championship in Canada 1991.; best player at the Basketball World Championship in Athens 1998.
Wrestlers Borivoj Vukov, Stevan Horvat, Sreten Damjanovic, Ivica Frgic, Branislav Simic and Momir Petkovic brought many medals from world championships and Olympic games.
Boxer Zvonimir Vujin twice won the bronze medal at the Olympics, Tadija Kacar won silver and Slobodan Kacar gold (he was also a professional world champion in a semi heavy-weight category).
Medals at the Olympic games also won rowers Milorad Stanulov and Zoran Pancic, while Milan Janjic was several times world kayak champion. From tennis schools in Vojvodina comes the world famous Monica Seles and on her path are now Tatjana Jecmenica and Sandra Nacuk. Archers of the "Novi Sad 1790" archers association are achieving significant success. Among the best individuals are Branko Loncar and Desanka Perovic (world champions) and Aranka Binder (second at the Olympics). The peak of all the results was shown by Aleksandra Ivosev by winning the gold and silver medal at the Olympic games in Atlanta 1996.
Zeljko Rebraca was the second player on the Basketball World Championship held in Athens in 1998 . He was born in a village of Prigrevica and started his basketball career in a nearby town Sombor

In the recent years volleyball has in Vojvodina justifiably got the name of a sport of today and tomorrow. Novi Sad is called the "city of volleyball" thanks to the seven times in a row state champion won by the volleyball club "Vojvodina NIS-RNS" [www.dunavnet.com]. At the volleyball matches in Novi Sad there are mostly about 10000 spectators. Playing for the Yugoslav national team or the famous foreign clubs in Brazil, Italy, Greece, Belgium, many former "Vojvodina" players gained world fame. Officially the best European player for 1997, NIKOLA GRBIC, played in "Vojvodina NIS-RNS".
 
In Vojvodina there are about 2,400 sports grounds, out of which 612 (25%) are indoor. They have a total of 5.5 million m2. The most important facility is Sports and Business Center "Vojvodina" in Novi Sad. It is a whole town on 20 hectares of sports grounds, out of which 85000m2 indoor, which makes it one of the biggest sports facilities of that kind in Europe.
